Left front profile in shoes 9-8-08   Left front profile out of shoes with first trim Left front profile 2 weeks later after a check up/roll refresh.  His angles have changed so much already!!  Heels are standing up more in just a couple of weeks.  :-) Sorry about the change in angle of the photos!  If you look at the very top growth of the heel, you should be able to see his new, tighter growth coming down, with the rest of the heel flaring forward/outward from there.  If the angle the picture was taken was the same as the others it would have been more obvious... Once again the angle is off (my camera's screen is broken so I can't actually see the image when I am taking it!  I have to assume... until Santa comes with a new one!  :) Left front profile Jan. 7th.  Almost 4 months exactly from shoe removal and showing really nice improvements... smooth healthy hoof wall and weight bearing area better aligned under the horse. Feb. 18th.  April 1st.

Left front oblique (concavity) after shoes pulled and first trim   After 2 weeks - sole is already appearing more concave with the coffin bone drawing upward in the capsule This is his 3rd trim.  This image is washed out a little, but I think you can see that the hoof has nice balanced concavity (he naturally softened the toe callous, I did not remove it!) Now that the nail holes are gone he has thicker walls coming down. Jan 7th trim.  Sorry about the dirt, it makes it harder to see what's changing but again - look at where his heels are in comparison to the first images.  His heel bulbs are looking so much rounder (rather than squished and flat) and his heels come to the back of the frog. Feb. 18th.  Sorry about the wet sand!  April 1st.

Left front sole view after shoe removal   After 2 week follow up -- is it really the same hoof??  The heels are coming back, frog is wider and more robust, and the overall shape is more naturally aligned towards the rear of the hoof (the widest point in the "before" image is closer to the toe than the heels whereas in the 2nd image it is closer to the heels) 4 weeks update, same changes from 2nd image... (more hearty frog, changes in shape of overall hoof)  This is definitely a transitioning hoof, however -- there are a lot of changes to come!  ;-) The heel triangle is more substantial, which I think gives him a better base on which to stand... so the heels don't pull forward any more. Hey that's a good lookin' hoof!  :) Feb April

Left hind profile in shoes   Left hind after 2 weeks. The compression stress ripples in the wall have smoothed out and the coronet appears more relaxed. Bruise in wall is moving downward... very short toe. The bruise is almost gone!  (sorry about the mud) There's that bruise - showing us how much his feet have changed and grown in the last 4 months. No flaring and nice angles. Feb. April.  He had a chip come off in his quarter.

Right front profile in shoes 9-8-08   After shoe removal and first trim After 2 weeks  - toes shorter, heels standing up on this hoof also! (you can see a small change in the angle of the tubules) 4 weeks after shoe removal.  The angle of the photo is slightly different than the others, but I think you can see that his toes are decreasing in length while his heels are encouraged to come further back underneath him. There were heels there all along, they just needed to stand at attention a bit.  :) 4 month mark - much easier breakover for him, with less leverage on his joints and tendons.  Feb.  April

Right front sole out of shoes   After 2 weeks - hoof shape changing as widest point moves to the back of the hoof (same as left front) Frog looks a little more robust as well. Right front sole view 4 weeks after shoe removal.  Overall hoof is rounder, with frog crevice starting to open up and weight bearing surface of heels moving further back as well. Compare the heel crevice (central sulcus) to the first image... no more butt crack... (sorry about the dirt, with the broken camera screen I don't notice things like that because I can't see them) His frogs are thickening and becoming more robust, and his heels are moving back further still. Feb April 1 (interesting what a difference a dry environment makes to the hoof... harder to trim, not as pretty - but very functional!!)

Right front oblique/concavity view after first trim out of shoes   After 2 weeks - the breakover has moved back and his heels are a little further to the back end of the frog where we ultimately want them to be (and a MUCH wider frog too please :-)) Beautiful change in concavity, and frogs have opened up.  The heels are only a trim or two away from where we want 'em. 4 month mark - nice concavity!!  Feb April

Right hind profile in shoes   After 2 weeks - unfortunately the dirt obscures our view but I think the angle of the pigment stripe tells alot here... it is much more upright so less run forward, and the highest nail holes are already on the ground!  Hopefully what we would also see is that the weight bearing surface of the heel has moved further to the back as well (see how it is in under the hoof in the first image?)  4 weeks - nail holes pretty much gone... pigment stripe aligning well with a straight hairline angle... to me this means the heels aren't pulling under as much any more.  It isn't easy to see from these photos, but it appears that his cannon bones are more aligned under his weight, rather than standing more camped under. Big difference in his heel height/angle!  Another look at the bruise to show us how he is growing... go!  go!  :) Feb April
